W2: Creating a New Social Media Platform
VSpace: Explore, Connect and Socialize in VR
Social media is essentially digital technology that enables the exchange of ideas and information via text, images and interacting within virtual networks and communities. It's used by over 5 billion people worldwide and commonly involves content created by users which allows interaction through the typical likes, comments, sharing et cetera. These days, even though social media is evolving and changing, many of them have also become similar and can sometimes still feel distant when interacting with others. VSpace would aim to be a little different by allowing users to see each other and be in the 'same space' in real time, changing the way people interact virtually.
VSpace would be a virtual reality-type social media platform where people can interact with others in a virtual space that is completely customizable to the user's likes and tastes. Users would need a VR headset in order to access this social media and it's accessible through phone or smart tv apps. The users are able to see each other and choose to appear as either an avatar or their actual appearance. This will allow people to feel closer and a slightly more real experience to interacting with others in real life.
VSpace's Unique Features
VSpace has features such as room and avatar customization, enhanced interactivity and multi-functional space. It allows users to visit each other's rooms, known as their VSpace, and simply interact with each other on the platform. VSpace would visually be shown as a square-shaped room when first accessed. It is completely customizable and people can also choose and buy room designs or accessories designed by other users as well. This allows the user to freely tap into their creativity and perhaps even do things they can't normally do in real life in terms of their room design. It's the same with their avatars if they wish to appear as one.
VSpace also enables users to experience a variety of interactions together such as taking pictures in the virtual photobooth, watching movies on the virtual tv, playing games, studying or working, reading books, eating meals and more all in this virtual space. This adds another dimension to usual interactions that can only be done in real life, and allows people to be able to be online and face to face with their peers at the same time.
Target Audience and Impact on Social Interactions
The target audience of VSpace are creative individuals, gamer and entertainment enthusiasts. VSpace also targets those who just want to socialize and meet new people or interact with their close-knit circle. The impact on social interaction and communication through this social media platform would be quite positive I feel, as it quite destroys the feeling of distance for people and also allows for many activities to be able to be done in the space. This allows for people to be closer by doing activities together and spending time together. It also can be a great place for people to collaborate and create business opportunities.
Some issues that can occur within VSpace is the health and safety of users in reference to long time usage, privacy concerns, user behaviour and platform stability. Some of these issues can be solved and some might always be an issue. It would be better if VSpace is handled with close-knit friends and family but some things can never be certain and user behaviour can't be anticipated. Security should be heightened however with health measures implemented for VSpace users.
VSpace can truly be a force for good to bring people closer together when used with respect and with trusted individuals. It has the potential to change the entire scene of how people interact with one another and positively fill in the gap that social media platforms of the current times are unable to fill. Embracing these values can really help to foster a community where meaningful connections can thrive.
